Statement from the Board

A former member of Equestrian SA has been found guilty in the Mount Barker Magistrates Court for breaching the Animal Welfare Act, with sentencing scheduled for 11 March.

This case has been widely reported in local and national media, and the ESA Board acknowledges and shares the public’s distress regarding the situation.

Horse welfare is Equestrian SA’s highest priority.

Everyone involved with horses has a responsibility to uphold proper standards of care, training, and treatment.

As part of this commitment, Equestrian Australia adheres to the FEI Code of Conduct, which requires the welfare of the horse to come before all competitive or commercial considerations.

Horses are the primary athletes in the sport, and we rely on their willingness, athleticism, and trust.

This reality demands an unwavering commitment to their care, safety, and dignity. Horses must not be subjected to abusive methods or practices that cause fear, and ESA has zero tolerance for any form of mistreatment.

ESA acknowledges the expert evidence given during the trial and thanks the RSPCA for pursuing the prosecution, as well as the individual who recorded and provided key evidence.

ESA is dedicated to clean, safe sport and our obligation to protect horses and people under our banner, regardless of status or achievement. More information on horse welfare and the code of conduct is available at https://www.equestrian.org.au/horse-welfare
